Mane Frame Zine Vol. 1: Shear Bible
I love zine culture. Taking an idea and using it to make a DIY self-published magazine grounded in creativity and expression. Something that’s affordable, accessible, and avoids perfection.
Pursuing your cosmetology license is so expensive, before even considering how costly continued education can be. A huge reason behind starting this blog for me is to bring hairstylists further education that is accessible and easy to understand. I also really just love my craft and being a hairstylist and I take any excuse to talk about hair and educate others about it.
I was craving an opportunity to be creative and artistic, but still wanted to bring something of value to the blog, so this month I’m excited to bring you the first volume of my new zine series, Mane Frame.
(it was originally going to be called 'Hair Brained’ but come to find out theres already an education platform with that name, haha).
Volume 1, Shear Bible, is an all-encompassing tome of information regarding hair cutting shears. It goes over everything I could thing of, from grade and quality, to types of shears and how to pick the right one for you. I wanted it not only to look cool but also be an indefinite resource to reference if you are in the market for new shears or want to show your clients why you use the shears in your kit.
Below you will find the full-art, digi-zine version of Shear Bible, as well as a printer-friendly pdf (already formatted to print as a booklet) if you wanted to make your own copy. There will also be physical copies for sale in my merch store, if you’d like to have them in your shop or business.
I hope the Shear Bible brings you some value and I appreciate you giving it a look as I was very happy to be really creative and out-of-the-box with it; and I hope you look forward to future volumes of Mane Frame Zine.
Mane Frame Zine Vol. 1 - Print PDF
Instructions for making your zine:
The PDF is already in the correct settings to be printed as a booklet. The logo still has the Red and Blue, so select the black and white setting if desired.
When you go to print, make sure you select to print double-sided, and that it is set to flip on the long edge of the page.
When assembling the zine make sure to cut across the width of the paper and DO NOT cut down the length (it helps me to fold the paper in half horizontally first so you have a guide to cut). You’ll have three double sided half sheets and a blank half-sheet (do with it what you please).
Stack them on top of each other in numerical order with the cover pages at the very bottom and pages 5 and 6 on top.
Now fold them together in half again, along where the spine of a book would be, in between pages 5 and 6. I like to take something rigid like a credit card and run it along the fold so it’s nice and crisp.
Take a stapler and staple vertically two or three times along the crease of the folded pages and now you have your own copy of the Shear Bible.
